May 6, 2014 – Segment 2
We broadcast another segment of our series on the Viet Nam War, Shared Weight: The Fall of Saigon, 30 Years Later. This segment is called Mash 1969 – Visions of War, Dreams of Peace. We turn to the stories of two writers: poet George Evans, who served as an Air Force medic and was the first soldier in Vietnam to defeat his court martial, in a tale that could have come straight out of M*A*S*H; and the late Lynda Van Devanter, an Army surgical nurse in 1969 and 1970, whose memoir Home Before Morning: The Story of an Army Nurse in Vietnam inspired the TV hit series China Beach.
