When journalist Novella Carpenter decided to raise a few chickens on the empty lot next to her home in Oakland, California, she didn’t know that a few years later she’d be running a full scale urban farm. Her memoir of cultivating land in an urban environment is Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.
Brian LeGette is co-founder and CEO of Big City Farms, which plans to create a network of city-wide urban farming operations, beginning here in Baltimore.
Together they joined us for a discussion of the benefits of urban farming, challenges to its implementation on a large scale, and the struggle for a more sustainable food system.
Novella Carpenter will be speaking tonight at the Enoch Pratt Free Library at 7pm.
