November 13, 2013 – Segment 4Part-time, or “adjunct,” instructors comprise 50% of all faculty members at U.S. colleges. These instructors often have no benefits, no job security, and low pay. The Baltimore Sun recently reported that local community colleges are cutting the hours of adjunct professors to avoid complying with the Affordable Care Act. We will examine the plethora of issues facing adjunct instructors, with:
- Ericka Blount Danois, adjunct professor at the University of Maryland, award-winning journalist, and author of Love, Peace and Soul: Behind the Scenes of America’s Favorite Dance Show: Soul Train;
- Mark Chalkley, adjunct professor, Baltimore City Community College and Community College of Baltimore County, and author ofHampden-Woodberry (Images of America);
- Mary Kambic, adjunct professor, Baltimore City Community College and Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC);
- and Dr. Kimberly Moffitt, formerly an adjunct professor and currently an assistant professor of American Studies at University of Maryland Baltimore County and author of Blackberries and Redbones: Critical Articulations of Black Hair/Body Politics in Africana Communities.
